MINDEN PICTURES: AMBIENTE

Good news for some of our marine friends. On Friday a federal appeals court reversed a 2012 lower court decision approving the use of low-frequency sonar for training, testing and routine operations by the US Navy. The sonar can injure whales, dolphins, seals, sealions and walruses’ hearing while also disrupting their mating and feeding habits. Clip de la Semana: Now you see me..

Points of light static and in motion, showing how the human visual system recognises shapes and movement from limited information. This clip is based on the patch light system developed by the Swedish psychophysicist Gunnar Johansson in the early 1970s. When static, the lights appear to have no connection to each other. With some lights attached to a person’s joints, the relationship between them becomes immediately obvious when the person crouches and stands, and disappears again when they stop moving.

MINDEN PICTURES: Monos Capuchinos usando Herramientas.

This indicates that these creatures are using stone hammers and anvils that are the oldest non-human tools known outside of Africa. Take a look at this gallery featuring this tool use behavior. Pete Oxford’s photos show monkeys testing nuts for freshness by knocking them together, setting up nuts to be smashed with large rocks against ancient stone anvils and sharing the meat and juice of the cracked nuts with their young.
