MINDEN PICTURES: Monos Capuchinos usando Herramientas.
On Monday, July 11th a new study by Dr. Michael Haslam and associates featured in Current Biology suggests that Brazilian Capuchin Monkeys have been using tools for at least 600 to 700 years! This indicates that these creatures are using stone hammers and anvils that are the oldest non-human tools known outside of Africa. Take a look at this gallery featuring this tool use behavior. Pete Oxford’s photos show monkeys testing nuts for freshness by knocking them together, setting up nuts to be smashed with large rocks against ancient stone anvils and sharing the meat and juice of the cracked nuts with their young.
