Points of light static and in motion, showing how the human visual system recognises shapes and movement from limited information. This clip is based on the patch light system developed by the Swedish psychophysicist Gunnar Johansson in the early 1970s. When static, the lights appear to have no connection to each other. With some lights attached to a person’s joints, the relationship between them becomes immediately obvious when the person crouches and stands, and disappears again when they stop moving.

On Monday, July 11th a new study by Dr. Michael Haslam and associates featured in
Current Biology suggests that Brazilian Capuchin Monkeys have been using tools for at least 600 to 700 years! This indicates that these creatures are using stone hammers and anvils that are the oldest non-human tools known outside of Africa. Take a look at this gallery featuring this tool use behavior. Pete Oxford’s photos show monkeys testing nuts for freshness by knocking them together, setting up nuts to be smashed with large rocks against ancient stone anvils and sharing the meat and juice of the cracked nuts with their young.

En nuestra costa se encuentran los bosques de algas que albergan una gran variedad de vida silvestre, incluyendo peces, focas, erizos y otros invertebrados. En cualquier ecosistema el equilibrio es esencial. El fotógrafo Norbert Wu documenta lo que sucede cuando las poblaciones de erizos de mar púrpuras crecen sin control debido a la pérdida de depredadores clave como las nutrias marinas. Los herbívoros espinosos devoran los discos de fijación que impiden que las algas se eleven dejando en su lugar ‘eriales de erizo’, donde los bosques de algas alguna vez florecieron.
